Frontal air bags have been standard equipment in all vehicles since the late nineties. Based on how severe an accident is, frontal air bags are designed to rapidly inflate for the purpose of preventing the occupants sitting in the front seats from colliding with the steering wheel, dashboard and windshield.
Some people unfortunately believe that if they have frontal air bags in their car, they can take a more lackadaisical attitude regarding the wearing of seat belts. This of course is foolish logic because air bags were designed to be effective only “when” passengers are wearing seat belts. In addition, wearing seat belts will protect you in rollovers, side-impact and rear-end crashes whereas frontal air bags will not. Also, and this is VERY important, people who are not wearing safety belts can be seriously injured if they are too close to an air bag when it is released.
To help reduce the risk of injury when a frontal air bag is released, follow these helpful tips:
- Always keep your safety belt buckled.
- Keep approximately 10-12 inches between your chest and where the air bag is deployed.
- Never place a rear facing infant seat in front of an any kind of air bag, that includes the new “advanced” air bags.
- General rule of thumb is to place any child 12 years or younger in the back seat, out of the range of a frontal air bag. Even with advanced air bags, children can be seriously injured or even killed by the deployment of the bag.

- Number of drivers that currently live with you?Â
- Number of drivers that you want to have on this quote?Â
- What type of residence do you live in and do you own or rent?Â
- Date of birth of all drivers?Â
- Do you currently have car insurance? If so, what type?Â
- What company is your policy with?Â
- How long have you been insured with this company?Â
- What’s the expiration date of your current policy?Â
- What’s your current coverage (liability limits)?Â
- What’s your age?Â
- What’s your home address?Â
- How long have you lived at this address?Â
- Will the vehicle being insured be kept at this address?Â

- Vehicle’s primary use (i.e. school, work, etc)?Â
- Number of days driven to school or work?Â
- How many miles is the car driven per year?Â
- Type of anti-lock brakes?Â

- Type of car insurance coverage you want to have (how much per person, per accident, property damage)?Â
There it is. They might slip in another question here or there but that list makes up the typical core group of questions. Also, if they’re doing their job well, they will ask you about other potential insurance needs like home and life if applicable. Their job is to sell, sell, sell so be prepared. Most policy quotes are good for up to 60 days.
